Homemade Washing Powder
Recently, there have been a lot of excited Thermomix owners out there comparing notes about their homemade washing powder. Funny how times change. 60 years ago, people would have been getting excited about being able to buy their laundry soap, in a powder, in a box!!
What’s so exciting is that this version saves you money, enables you to control what chemical contact you have and for me, avoid excessive added perfumes, which I am allergic to.
The recipe is simple:
1 bar of laundry soap (Sunlight or similar), chopped
1/2 bar Sards Wonder soap, chopped
200g borax
320g washing soda (not to be confused with cooking soda)
Put the soap into the TM and chop on SP 7 for 10 seconds. Add other ingredients and mix on SP 4 for 10 seconds.
This is quite strong, you only need 1 – 2 tablespoons per load and works equally in top or front loaders. The ingredients work out to be about $4.00 and it makes over 20 loads.
You could scent this with a few drops of essential oil, perhaps lemongrass or tea tree?
Has anyone used this in a front loader as I know the powder needs to be finer for them than for a top loader
Hi Michelle
I have used this in my front loader – I just use less…

I have not used anything else since my first batch! Made more tonight and even my sceptical husband, who does the washing, just raves. He used to have to soak our white linen serviettes for a good day in Napisan, now they come up perfectly clean just in the wash with 1 tablespoon! Give it a go!
Yes, I have been using it too and it goes much further than normal washing powder. I found the sunlight soap a bit too perfumed for my liking so I used a milder soap from the bathroom aisle and increased the Sard component and it works just as well!!
