Homemade “Milo” shake

January 27, 2012

This is yum! I have adapted this recipe is from the Thermomix Forum and doesn’t really taste like milo but is a really yummy substitute. It is based on nuts and raw cacao and goes like this:

60g linseeds

30g sesame seeds

30g sunflower seeds

30g pepitas

70g almonds

50g brazil nuts

30g pecan nuts

70g raw cacao powder

120g rapadura sugar

Start by grinding linseeds and sesame seeds into a fine powder – speed 9 approx 10 seconds.
Place everything else except the cocoa powder and rapadura in the bowl and blend on speed 9 for 5 seconds.  Don’t blend too far as you don’t want paste.
Add cacao and rapadura and mix through, about speed 7 for 3 seconds.
Use exactly like milo. My number 2 son says it isn’t quite sweet enough, but you can vary to taste.

The ground nut combination offers complete protein, a good dose of antioxidants and many other vitamins and minerals.  The seed combination is like a food multi-vitamin as they are rich in all of the macronutrients and most  vitamins and minerals.
If you leave out the cocoa and sugar, you have a fantastic “booster” for any recipe as the nut/seed mix is quite flavourless by itself.  Stir through porridge, homemade dip, breakfast cereal or yoghurt. Add into milkshakes or smoothies.  Add to any bread, cake, muffin, scone, pancake etc.

Works on icecream too!!

To Make the Shake

I used 2 tabs of milo mix to 120g of cashew milk and also added 2 dates for extra sweetener (at 12yo request!) Natural sugar is better than refined anyday, and the dates give a caramelness which suits.
